Paula Abdul: Back Pain

The former American Idol judge and recording artist has spent most of her life in pain. Abdul’s condition began at 17 when a cheerleading accident caused awful back pain. A car accident in 1987 and a plane crash in 1993 added to her chronic pain. By 2005, she was diagnosed with a chronic pain condition called reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome. In 2009, Abdul told Ladies Home Journal that she checked herself into a California rehabilitation center to quit her dependence on painkillers.

By the time her 1988 film Working Girl made Melanie Griffith an A-list star, she was already struggling with chronic pain in her neck. It began in 1980 when Griffith was hit by a car in Los Angeles. An addiction to painkillers, mixed with alcohol problems, led to several stays in rehab. A ski accident, knee surgeries, and more pain pills led to more rehab in 2009, but the following year, she told Spain’s Hola magazine that she had beaten her addictions.
