Shaping Up – It’s never too late!

At some point in his or her adult life, everyone has made a New Year’s resolution to get fit and into shape. From buying a membership at the biggest, shiniest gym to swearing off the carbs, we have all tried at least one if not two or more trendy diets, be it South Beach, Dr. Atkins Low-Carb, The Serotonin Diet, or Eat for Your Blood Type. Some have gone so far as to remodel the spare bedroom or clean out the garage and set up their own workout centers. The common thought behind these efforts is simple: if the equipment is close by, you will not have an excuse not to use it. Soon enough, this equipment becomes the ideal place to hang your shirts and slacks – soon your treadmill is dressed better than you are.

New Year resolutions are too often broken, starting the vicious cycle of thoughts of failure, depression due to failure, binge eating, crash dieting, half-hearted attempts at going to gym, more binge eating, etc.

Consider this: If you have made the decision to break this cycle, it is never too late to join the ranks of athletes. You have made a GREAT decision! Becoming an athlete does not necessarily mean you are going to climb Mt. Everest or start jumping out of planes. With a little thinking and planning, getting into shape should not become a tedious affair.

Newbie athletes are encouraged to make a quick visit to their health care professional and request some basic test to ensure they are in good health to start a vigorous regimen. Talk with a nutritionist regarding the best meal plans that will help you achieve your goals. When creating this plan, be sure to include some down time to relax, get plenty of sleep and stay hydrated.
